Saturday 8 november
Observation of the total eclipse of the moon

To be observed with the telescope PETI situated on the roof terrace of the IAA, and the images will distributed by Internet in the IAA webpage http://www.iaa.es/eclipse.html

If by any circumstance it could not access to this page, the IAA has to this event the alternative webpage http://www.scyt.iaa.es/eclipse.html

Tuesday 11 november
Presentation of the CD-ROM to publicize "Universo Compacto"

The CD-ROM includes a general introduction and proposes different paths by which to begin a virtual trip through the universe: the solar system, the stars, galaxies, the universe (cosmology) and the history of astronomy.

The CD-ROM will be presented in the main hall, where one of the possible trips through the universe will be shown and a copy of the CD will be distributed to those in attendance. Also, Computers will be available in the courtyard of the institute for various demonstrations and answers to questions.

Announcement of the "IAA observation contest"

Announcement and publication of the "IAA observation contest".

Directed at students of the first and second cycle of the bachillerato, the contest will consist of preparing an astronomical-observation proposal accompanied by a detailed scientific and instrumental explanation.

The proposal can be made by groups of no more than 3 students, assisted by a teacher, this being a limitation imposed by the physical space available. The proposals received will be evaluated by a committee comprised of IAA researchers based on criteria of originality, feasibility, and scientific interest of the observations.

The team with the winning proposal (students and accompanying teacher) will receive a prize consisting of a visit to the IAA in Granada and will carry out the observations in the Sierra Nevada Observatory, assisted by an IAA astronomer. In addition, the school of the winning students will be awarded a set of books on astronomy together with a small telescope.

The bases of the contest can obtain in the page Web of the IAA.

Wednesday 12 november
Night of observation and review of astronomical results and events

For this, the telescope PETI will be used on the roof terrace connected to the screen of the Main Hall of the IAA, so that it will be quite similar to real observation: the astronomer will set the coordinates of the object to be observed, the telescope will locate the object, and the object will appear on the screen.

Given that each image takes 30 seconds to appear, the astronomer in charge of the presentation will offer short explanations about the object to be seen.

To give an overview of the astrophysics today, the IAA has organized a review talk (accompanied by a booklet) that will treat two main aspects:

Astronomical results: some of the most outstanding scientific results of the year will be chosen, referring to instrumentation, space missions, astronomy in different wavelengths (e.g., radioastronomy, X-rays), cosmology, high energy, etc. The importance of these discoveries in our knowledge of the Cosmos will be reflected.

Astronomical events of 2003: a review will be made of phenomena such as Leonidas, the bolide that crossed the sky over Algeria in January, the course of Mercury, or the eclipse of the moon that we recently viewed. Each phenomenon will be described, with images accompanied by published writing and videos in the presentation. This session includes a review of the dates of interest for next year to help amateurs track astronomical events.

19:00 h - "A year of Astronomy" talk

20:00 h - Night of astronomical observation

Thursday 13 november
Astrophysics in the cinema

Taking advantage of the great capacity communication of the cinema, a proposal has been made to show the projection of a fragments selection with content related to the astrophysics, followed by a brief commentary by a scientist specialized in that topic and by a dialogue opened with the public on the subjects that are approached in the films.

Among the objectives behind this proposal is to draw society closer to science by means of a familiar influential medium, thereby bolstering public scientific knowledge through the talk by an expert.

Four thematic sections will be analyzed:

  • The Man and the Cosmos.
  • Extraterrestrial Life.
  • Space Exploration.
  • Astrophysics Technology.
